Een van de uniekste restaurants van West-Vlaanderen

Den Artiest :  'De Gaper' ?

Restaurant Den Artiest (The Artist) is located in Flanders Fields Country on the "Menin Road"
(road Ypres-Menen = Ieperstaat), next to Flemich Hill 'Koelenberg', in the middle of the
triangle Roeselare, Ypres and Kortrijk.

Built in 1868 as 'Café de Voyageur' and thus the oldest building in Geluwe (Wervik)
Eventually the building survived the Great War (WO I and WO II).
Den Artiest was restored in 1971 and operated as an artists pub by sculptor Jean Claeys.

The inhabitants of Geluwe (outpost on the way to 'Ypres Salient') are called 'Gapers'.
The first street festival (Gaper Parties) in 1973 the sculptor placed a sculpture at the front door.
Soon the pub colloquially was known as 'De Gaper'.

In 1982 the business was taken over by 'Family Verbeke' and developed into a real Restaurant.
The special effect that the artist Jean Claeys placed in '73, is to this day being held in honor.

Nowadays, one can enjoy typical 'Flemish dishes' that still are prepared the traditional way.
"Restaurant Den Artiest" with its rustuc setting is a unique dining place.

When you are making a tour in Flanders, the Westhoek (Flemish Hills) or in 'Heuvelland' (Hilly Country),
and you like unique places, than you will surely appreciate its location near the motorway A 19 Ypres-Kortrijk

Today "Den Artiest" is a warm and verry cozy restaurant with candlelight and roaring log fire.
